Long Island, NY Garden
Project Brief: This compact suburban property had been neglected for a decade and was engulfed in overgrowth. Ivy had swallowed up much of the house and the sidewalks, wisteria had blocked the light from the windows and grass and weeds had submerged old stepping stone paths creating dangerous conditions for the client and her visitors.
Objective: The client wanted to preserve her privacy and at the same time create spaces for outdoor entertaining as well as to display a collection of sculpture. Screening views from her neighbors was a high priority and because this is a historic district installing fences or partitions was neither possible nor desirable. The client further specified that any plantings needed to provide instant screening as she did not want to wait for plants to mature. |

Solution: The first order of business was to clear out the overgrowth and renovate the existing shrub and tree plantings. We then designed the hardscaping to ensure easy traffic flow and to feature different garden rooms with vastly different gardening conditions, from heavy shade to baking sun. We installed bluestone paths, walkways and patios for structure and entertaining. Lighting was installed for safety along walkways as well as to highlight garden and sculptural features. An irrigation system was installed. Two circular perennial borders at the front of the property were installed and these curves were echoed by the semi-circular front patio that was flanked by two terracotta jardinières planted with boxwood topiary to create a sense of elegance and formality.
