Lancashire, England Garden
Project Brief: Convert three acres of this former working farm into a more elegant environment for an active and sociable young family.
(This is an ongoing project, Photographs are limited) Objective: The clients entertain frequently, enjoy gardening and their children participate in equestrian sports. The clients expressed a strong desire to create the feeling of bringing the outdoors indoors. The house fronts on a busy road and they wanted to create a privacy screen here. Solution: Develop a hardscaping plan that would provide privacy and create a series of linked outdoor rooms. We wanted to explore variety and create distinctly different garden settings. The clients’ love of gardening permitted us to incorporate some higher maintenance features including a fish pond, a rose garden and a fernery. Stone walls with a formal entrance gate were erected for privacy and to screen the road.. The driveway was designed to provide easy access to the house and stables. Stone patios, paths and walkways were installed to establish traffic patterns and entertainment areas. A fish pond linked to a more formal fountain by a stone bridge and fed by a runnel was created as an important focal point. Views of this feature can be viewed from indoors in the conservatory or, during summer months, from a rustic stone gazebo. The gardens designed include a blue garden, a cottage-style rose garden, a fernery/container garden and a series of colorful and floriferous perennial borders. An existing orchard was enhanced with the planting of a wildflower meadow. |
